Setting up a meetup.com group is pretty straightforward, but here are some of the settings and some suggestions.

Basics

  1. Name the group
    • We suggest "Lean Startup Circle - [your city name]"
  2. Headline
    • The headline should be the same as the group name. Make it clear that the group is a local one or you'll get annoying emails from confused people nowhere near you.
  3. Add a description
    • It's best to use words and language that your local entrepreneurs will understand. So get out of the building and talk to people to find out what words they use to describe what they need out of a Lean Startup Meetup.
    • Make sure to include a Lean Startup trademark notice
  4. What are members called?
    • Again, pick something that makes sense to your local community. We suggest "Awesome Startup People"
  5. Location
    • Self explanatory
  6. Web address
    • It's best to get some extra SEO juice by using a subdomain on LeanStartupCircle.com. You'll set this up later.
  7. Adding meetups
    1. Up to you. For more control, pick only organizers.
  8. Meetup group photo

Your Members

  1. Member profiles
    • This is a great place to ask survey questions so you can know the makeup of your group as it grows. You might ask:
      • Would you describe yourself more as a Hacker, Hustler, or Designer?
      • What size company do you work for?
  2. How members join this group
    • You probably want to let anyone join your group.
  3. New member emails
    • Make sure you have a nice email message that makes sense. If your style is humorous, make it humorous. If you are more formal, make it formal. Be authentic. Here is a sample letter:

Hello and welcome to the Lean Startup Circle!

We're a group of startups dedicated to succeeding by incorporating a culture of learning into our organizations. We believe that vision is amplified by validated learning through experimentation and metrics.

On behalf of myself ([organizer]) and the other volunteers, thanks for joining and please let us know what we can do to help you!

Cheers,

[organizer]

Topics

Selecting topics helps people find your meetup group. Some suggestions are listed under marketing.

Privacy

  1. Make meetup group public
    • Lean Startup Circle is an open organization so it's best to keep your organization public.
  2. Who can create new pages
    • If you'd like your members to create pages, then you are welcome to, but it's better for the global community if informational pages are created on the global wiki, not just for the local meetup. So we recommend you disable this option. However this is up to you, just watch for spammers.

Appearance

The appearance of your group is up to you. You can draw on the branding guide we are developing and use any of the assets such as the logo we have.

Your Venues

Skip adding venues now until you're ready to start planning your first meetup.

Manage Custom Domains

You can setup your own domain name, but we suggest using [your city name].leanstartupcircle.com. To set this up, please let us know which city you'd like to set up. We need to set up a cname record on our DNS settings.

After that, just follow the instructions on the page!

Optional Features

  1. Mailing lists and message boards
    • We suggest allowing members to send message but moderating them first so as to reduce any spam or unwanted messages. However when the group is small this may not be an issue.
    • Similarly we suggest turning off your message board to avoid spam and using the global Lean Startup Circle discussion group to encourage a global community.
  2. Set your default currency
    • You'll need to do this if you charge for events.
  3. Track web stats using Google Analytics
    • Google Analytics can help track what's going on with your group. You can set up goals and look at your conversion rates and try different descriptions and layouts to see if you can increase your conversion rate.
    • Please help us get a global view of lean startup by integrating with out analytics:
      • Use GA tracking code: UA-30468280-1
      • Contact us to get access to the global Google Analytics account. You'll get a view of what's going on everywhere and you'll also be able to see your individual group data.
  4. Follow us on

Hi all, looking for some feedback. Just set-up my first meetup group focused on lean startup for healthcare in Lagos, Nigeria. Please check it out and let me know if it is appropriate to use to set-up events and start driving discussions.
